Paint table Satur... Sunday #23

This week I'm a bit late but I can't resist to present the figures I painted yesterday and today. It's a bunch of figures for the 2nd KGL Light Battalion at Waterloo and in addition another test for my airbrush equipment. Firstly I primed them with the excellent ready-to-airbrush Vallejo Survace Primer, then I sprayed the trousers gray and covered them with masking tape after drying. Lastly I sprayed the jackets dark green and now they are to be detailed...
Until now I'm really happy with the result. It saved a lot of time and I'll try this technique with the next figures again. Unfortunately on some figures the masking tape damaged the grey coat of paint slightly. Maybe I should try masking putty which is said not to adhere to the masked surface.

Anyway... Enjoy the remaining weekend !

  2. Airbrushing! That is such a great technique to learn. The base coats come out so smoothly. You know, I never thought about the problem of tape pulling off paint.

You did confuse me for a few seconds on what day of the week it was. Almost scared myself there.

    1. Even after several years I'm an absolute beginner with airbrushing. I've been using it for base colours only but it never tried more difficult things then camouflage patterns.

Tape and colours ca be a problem with the extremely thin layers of colour but shouldn't be with special aribrush masking tape which I used... Shouldn't be... ;-)

  4. A very clever technique. Instead of trying masking tape, you might want to experiment with painter's tape (usually green in colour as sold here in Canada) - it is designed to be gentle to paint.
    Thanks for sharing this technique!

    1. Thanks for the advice, Micheal.
Actually the masking tape I used is designed especially for airbrushing... But I'll keep watching for some alternatives as well.

  5. Nice idea... maybe i need to do that as well to speed my painting up, too.

Take a look at "Frogtape" available from most DIY stores here in Germany (Hornbach was having a sale on it last month). It is supposed to be easy on the existing paint (cannot comment on that since I have only used it on clear surfaces so far) and it is supposed to prevent wet paint from running under the tape. It is a bit expensive, but might be worth a try as well!

  6. Finally caught up on your blog. Some really great work on display. Your take on the wet palette is interesting, I hope you tell us how it works out for you. Airbrushing is something I haven't worked up the courage to try. My initial thought is maybe the paint needed more time to harden before putting the tape on? The figures look like they are off to a great start.
