Tommies finished !

Finally I found the time to finish the six WW1 Tommies that were lurking around my painting table for a while. Actually they were the counterweight to the terrain piece I'm working on for our presentation game at Crisis 2015 but they're bringing my WW1 collection forward to their completion in 2016 or 2017. We'll see...

But now for the boys:

All six miniatures are from Great War Miniatures wonderful WW1 range. The proportions are really good and the poses are very dynamic. Excellent pieces by the sculptor who is - as far as I know - Aly Morrison. The paint them I used Vallejo Model Colours and some advice of helpful Mark Hargreaves of 'Over open sights' frame. His painting guides proves extremely helpful and Mark proved to by a kind and patient fellow. Many thanks to him!

However with those boys my collection rose to 16 painted models and sooner or later I could aim for a platoon sized game. We'll probably use Bolt Action since the system is very popular in our gaming group but with a couple of special rules for WW1 I presume.

Besides that the interior of my ruins are taking shape. The plank floor for the smaller one is nearly finished and the storeys for the larger one are in progress as well:

WW I project going on - Four more Tommies finished.

Besides painting the next KGL riflemen I relaxed a bit with some more WW I Tommies. Finally I got four more of them finished that will reinforce the ranks of my collection:

As usual the boys are painted with Vallejo Model Colors and with the same colour choices as the first ones. Now I started to write down my colour recipes because I realised that it is quite hard to remember all the triads for the different themes...

Stupidly I missed a flashline on one of the boys so he has a nasty scar running over his face. Although I was rather angry about my carelessness I presume that it will not attract too much attention when he enters the battlefield with his fellow soldiers...

Next on the workbench will be two sergeants and another two Tommies for WW I. Of course in addition to more riflemen and the Napoleonic vignette...

WW 1 Tommies started - Two officers finished

After my sunday airbrush session I couldn't resist to get some more paint on the Tommies. To act as my first guniea pigs I chose two officers from Great War Miniatures' excellent World War 1 range:

Painting them was great fun. The sculpts are very well and the figures are full of character. For the choice of colours my special thanks to Mark Hargreaves. Most of you will know his blog "Over open Sights" and the excellent miniatures he presents there. Mark is a gifted painter as well as a very helpful chap. He's offering some painting guides on his blog and was kind enough to answer me some further questions. So my colour choices base on his tutorial with only a few replacements for colours I didn't have.

As usual I used Vallejo Model Colors and some inks and washes from various manufacturers. For the first time I didn't use spray varnish. Instead I employed Marabu Mattlack (matt varnish) from the paint pot. It was very easy to apply and dryed cristal clear. A really good alternativ to the spray cans with which I didn't make good experience only.

The bases aren't finished yet. I'm not sure whether I should static grass as usual or rather stay muddy. Probably a compromise of both...
