Detective Inspector and Detective Sergeant finished !

On saturday I presented a preview of the two figures I was painting then. Now they are finally finished and here we go:

Detective Inspector Edmund Reid

The first one displays a Victorian Detective Inspector. The wonderful miniature belongs to Northstar's range and as far as I know it's sculpted by Mike Owen and he performed a wonderful job with it. The details of the suit and the facial expression are worked out perfectly and it was on extraordinary pleasure to paint him. As usual I employed Vallejo Model Colors and decided to give him a bluish grey suit and a dark grey nearly black overcoat. Actually I wanted to paint a checked pattern as well but my first tries on his left looked disappointing so I decided to leave it plain grey.

Detective Sergeant Bennet Drake

The second miniatures is a Detective Sergeant which comes from Northstar's Scotland Yard company for In her Majesty's Name as well. For him I chose a dark grey suit. First I went for Dark Grey -> Neutral Grey -> Light Grey which turned to light for my taste. Thus I gave it a wash with Vallejo Black Wash to darken it. Although I like the inspector's suit better I'm rather satisfied with the result. To set a colour difference I painted his overcoat dark brown rather than grey or black.

For the bases I used a mixture of sand and gravel. I wanted the peelers to fit more onto London's streets than into the countryside so I painted it with different shades of grey. But only three instead of fifty. Anyway I'm not completely happy with its look since it makes the overall appearance of the figures too grey but I didn't have a better idea so far.

Lately I watched the second season of the BBC / Amazon tv-series Ripper Street. In my humble opinion it was much better than season one and dragged me into Victorian miniatures once again. After lurking around at the well-known dealers' websites I fell for the Scotland Yard miniatures Northstar produces for Osprey's In her Majesty's Name. After returning from holiday I started with two of the CID fellows that reminded my of DI Edmund Reid and DS Bennet Drake:

This weekend I'll try to finish the pair and besides that  have a couple of ruins to build. Two wonderful sets of magnificent Stronghold Terrain.

Painting Challenge Round up - Week 5 - Victorian soldiers and another spreadsheet

Last saturday was deadline for the next bonus round of Curt's painting challenge:
Victorian

Although the Victorian era hasn't been my cup of tea so far I didn't want to wag this bonus round. Therefor I digged out some very special single miniatures which I bought from Northstar on Crisis last year:

 

Both are part of their Tea Time Miniatures range and depict British soldiers having a cup of tea. As chaps from the Crimean War they fit perfectly into the Victorean age so I chose to paint them for the challenge.

The paintjob is not too special actually. As usual I used Vallejo Model Colors and built up the coulours in three stages. I'm more or less satisfied with the result although this pictures are far from good... Anyway bonus round passed and still on target for passing all of them.

Thus I'm alredy preparing my entries for the Myth round and the Hot round. Thor is nearly finished so I counted him as finshed in week 7 for the spreadsheet.

Unfortunately the workload bedides the bonus round is standing back currently. My actual plan is to prepare the bonus entries as soon as possible and then use the remaining time to paint as many other figures as possible. Main topics there will be War of the Roses, 2nd Anglo-Afghan War or First World War. All three conflicts are sideshows for me which have wonderful figures which should be rather quick to paint. Perfect for painting under time pressure...

However until now I'm pretty confidant to pass all bonus rounds and achieve my 750 point target in the last furlong.
